UNICEF: Gaza children are dying at an unprecedented rate

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned that children in Gaza are losing their lives at an unprecedented rate and that the international community must act urgently to prevent widespread child deaths.

“The suffering in Gaza is more intense than anywhere else, and children are dying at an unprecedented rate,” UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Sheiban said in a press conference after a trip to the Middle East.

Stressing that the world is at a historic turning point, Sheiban warned that current decisions will determine the survival or death of tens of thousands of children.

Referring to his observations in Gaza, he spoke of the depth of suffering and hunger on the faces of children and families, adding that news images only show part of the bitter reality of this region.

According to a UNICEF report, more than 18,000 children have died so far during the Gaza conflict, and the region is now facing a serious risk of famine.

UNICEF called on the international community to intervene immediately to stop this humanitarian disaster.
