Deadly train derailment in Baden-Württemberg, Germany: 3 dead, 34 injured

A regional passenger train in the southeastern German state of Baden-Württemberg derailed near the town of Riedlingen on Sunday, July 28, 2025 (around 6:10 p.m. local time), killing at least three people and injuring 34 others.

According to Ulm police and local media, three of the injured are in critical condition.

The train, which was traveling on a 90-kilometer route between the cities of Sigmaringen and Ulm, was carrying about 100 passengers when two of its carriages derailed in a wooded area.

Thomas Strobel, the interior minister of Baden-Württemberg state, said heavy rainfall and the possibility of landslides could have been factors in the accident, but investigations were ongoing to determine the exact cause.

He added: “Heavy rains have occurred in this area and the possibility of its impact and landslides cannot be ruled out.”

Images released from the scene of the accident show overturned carriages and rescue workers trying to rescue passengers.
