Trump brokers ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to meet to reach an immediate ceasefire following three days of border clashes.
According to Reuters, Thailand’s interim Prime Minister Phumtham Wachai thanked Trump for his diplomatic efforts and said that his country agreed in principle to the ceasefire but wanted to see the Cambodian side’s sincere intentions.
Trump announced on social media that he had spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Thai counterpart and warned that continued fighting would lead to a halt in trade deals with both countries.
Phumtham also asked Trump to inform Cambodia that Thailand is ready for bilateral talks to establish a ceasefire and peacefully resolve disputes.
The conflict, described as the worst border conflict between the two countries in the past 13 years, has so far left more than 30 dead and 130,000 displaced.
