Deadly clashes in Sweida and Israeli intervention in support of the Druze

Fierce clashes between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes in the city of Sweida, located in southern Syria, began on Sunday and have left more than 200 dead so far.

The clashes erupted after an armed group of Bedouins insulted a Druze businessman and quickly escalated into sectarian violence.

The Syrian interim government’s Interior Ministry announced that government forces had been dispatched to the area to restore order, but the arrival of these forces was met with a sharp Israeli response.

Israel, which describes itself as a supporter of the Druze community, carried out airstrikes against Syrian government forces in Sweida on Tuesday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the strikes were carried out to prevent harm to the Druze and to preserve the demilitarized zone in southern Syria.

This is while many Druze leaders, including Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hajri, have condemned Israeli intervention and called for resistance against government forces.
