NASA’s Parker Solar Probe captures closest image of the Sun
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe set an unprecedented record on Christmas Eve last year by approaching within 6.12 million kilometers of the sun’s surface, and now NASA has released the most stunning images ever taken of the solar corona.
These images, captured by the WISPR instrument, show unparalleled detail of the Sun’s fiery corona, solar winds, and colliding massive plasma explosions (CMEs).
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), massive bursts of charged particles and magnetic fields, are major factors influencing space weather that can threaten satellites, power grids, and astronauts.
These firsthand images of the Sun’s dynamic and extremely hot atmosphere are a major step towards a better understanding of solar phenomena and their effects on Earth.
