PKK disarmament in Rania is a historic step for peace in the region

According to news sources, the disarmament ceremony of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is scheduled to be held tomorrow, Saturday, 12 July 2025, in the Rania region of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

The event, which officials say is a milestone on the path to regional peace, will be attended by 30 to 40 PKK fighters, including some senior members of the group, who will lay down their weapons.

Dilshad Shahab, spokesman for the Kurdistan Regional Government, expressed his pleasure at hosting this historic ceremony and thanked the Turkish government and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party for “trusting” the Kurdistan Region in holding this event.

He described this move as a sign of political maturity and an important step towards strengthening stability and peaceful coexistence in the region.

The ceremony follows a call by imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan in February 2025 for the group to be disbanded and an end to the forty-year armed struggle with the Turkish government.

The PKK officially announced its dissolution in May of this year and declared a unilateral ceasefire.
