The United States Court of International Trade ruled this morning, Thursday, May 28, that US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on other countries were illegal.
According to Reuters, the court ruled to prohibit the implementation of such tariffs, stating that the announcement of such tariffs exceeded the limits of the US presidential authority.
The US Court of International Trade explained that the US Constitution gives Congress exclusive authority to regulate trade with other countries that are not affected by the president’s emergency powers to protect the US economy.
According to the report, the lawsuit, filed on behalf of five small American businesses that import goods from the countries targeted by the tariffs, was the first major legal challenge to Trump’s tariffs.
Reuters also added that the lawsuit, along with challenges from 13 US states and other small business groups, is one of seven court challenges to Trump’s tariff policies.
