US, South Korea reduce duration and scope of joint military exercises

South Korea and the United States announced that they will reduce the duration of their annual joint military exercises from 11 days to five days, and that a number of field exercises will also be limited.

This decision was made after US President Donald Trump ordered a significant reduction in the participation of American forces in these exercises.

The “Olchi Freedom Shield” exercise, which began on August 17, will now continue until August 21, while it was previously scheduled to continue until August 27.

South Korea’s defense minister has also said that the second phase of these exercises, which was supposed to include counterattack operations after the initial defensive phase, will be canceled.
