UNESCO calls for immediate restoration of girls’ and women’s right to education in Afghanistan

On the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Islamic Emirate’s re-establishment of sovereignty, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has called for the immediate and unconditional restoration of the right to education for women and girls in Afghanistan.

UNESCO has said that Afghanistan is the only country in the world where girls and women are officially denied education beyond primary level, and by 2026, an estimated 2.4 million girls will not have access to secondary education.

The organization added that nearly 70,000 people have benefited from UNESCO’s education and skills training programs, 73 percent of whom are women.
