Peshawar Supreme Court halts deportation and detention of Afghan citizens
The Peshawar High Court has ordered the Pakistani government to halt the deportation, detention, and transfer of about 140 Afghan families and a number of other Afghan citizens for the next 60 days or until a decision is made on their asylum applications.
According to the Dawn newspaper, the court has asked the Pakistani government to review the refugee status of these individuals. Most of these citizens have approached the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for international protection and resettlement in third countries.
These individuals include former government employees, former security forces, judges, journalists, university professors, and civil society activists.
