Guterres: UN on verge of imminent financial collapse

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned in an official letter to member states that the organization is facing a severe financial crisis and is at risk of “imminent financial collapse.”

“The crisis is deepening, threatening the implementation of programs and risking financial collapse, and the situation will worsen in the near future,” Guterres wrote, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

He stressed that the organization’s liquidity may run out by July, adding: “Either all member states fulfill their obligations to pay in full and on time, or the organization’s financial rules must be fundamentally reformed to prevent financial collapse.”

The United Nations has been struggling with a liquidity crisis for months, with the United States reducing voluntary payments to some UN agencies and refusing to pay its full mandatory contribution to the regular budget and peacekeeping operations
