An Afghan citizen was arrested in the US on charges of supporting ISIS Khorasan

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that John Shah Safi, an Afghan citizen living in Virginia, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on charges of providing material support to the Khorasan branch of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

According to the published press release, Jan Shah Safi’s application for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) had also been previously denied.

Security officials have also claimed that he also provided weapons for his father.

The arrest was made as part of a broader security review that intensified after tens of thousands of Afghan citizens entered the United States during the 2021 evacuation operation following the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan.

No further details have been released yet about the type of alleged support or the status of the case.

The Department of Homeland Security has emphasized that combating terrorist threats within the United States remains a priority.
