Afghan citizen arrested on charges of shooting two US National Guard members

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan citizen who arrived in the United States in 2021, was arrested on charges of shooting two West Virginia National Guard members near the White House.

The attack occurred at 2:15 p.m. local time on Wednesday at the intersection of 17th and I Street, just two blocks from the White House.

Two soldiers who were on duty as part of an anti-crime security patrol were seriously injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

National Guard forces present at the scene shot the attacker, wounding and arresting him.

The mayor of Washington called the incident a targeted attack, and US justice officials announced that the possibility of a terrorist act was also under serious investigation.

The shooting comes as thousands of National Guard troops have been deployed to the US capital on the orders of President Trump to reduce crime.
