UN Special Representative visits earthquake-hit areas in eastern of Afghanistan
UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Rosa Otenbayeva visited the earthquake-hit areas in the east of the country.
UNAMA said in a statement that Otunbayeva emphasized the vital role of women in the humanitarian assistance process and called on the international community and donors to act as quickly as possible to support the affected people as the winter season approaches.
He warned that the United Nations has appealed for $139 million in aid to meet the immediate needs of people in the affected areas, but without these funds, the lives of thousands of people will be at serious risk in the coming winter.
During her visit, Otunbayeva spoke about the challenges facing women and children in these areas and emphasized the need for targeted support to protect lives from the impending cold.
