Croatian President Calls for Recognition of Palestine

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic has called on the country’s government to begin the process of recognizing Palestine as an independent state in parliament.

In a meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsan Aghabakian in Zagreb, he emphasized that recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people to have an independent state is the only way to establish lasting peace in the Middle East.

Milanovic, while condemning the Israeli army’s attacks on civilians in Gaza and the plan to occupy the area, announced that he would work resolutely, within the framework of his legal authority, to recognize Palestine as soon as possible.

These statements come at a time when 147 out of 193 UN member states have recognized Palestine as a state, and other countries such as France, Malta, and Australia plan to do so at the UN General Assembly in September 2025.
