Massive fire engulfs residential areas in Canakkale, Türkiye
On Friday, August 8, a massive fire that started in agricultural lands in the Bega region of Çanakkale province in northwestern Turkey quickly spread to forests and residential areas due to strong winds, creating apocalyptic scenes.
The out-of-control fire has so far destroyed about 1,400 hectares of land and is threatening residential areas, including the Troya Plains, student dormitories, and areas near the State Hospital and Çanakkale University Onskes Mart.
According to local authorities, strong winds prevented timely extinguishing of the fire and several houses were burned down.
The Turkish Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) announced that more than 50,000 residents of the affected areas have been temporarily moved to safe areas and that evacuation operations are continuing in nine residential areas in Çanakkale.
Firefighters, helicopters and water cannons are trying to contain the fire, but the speed of the fire’s spread is outpacing firefighting efforts.
