Trump’s controversial plan to reopen Alcatraz prison costs $2 billion

US President Donald Trump has presented a plan to rebuild and reopen the infamous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay as a maximum-security prison.

According to Axios, citing government sources, the implementation of this plan will cost about $2 billion.

The prison, which was closed in 1963 due to high operating costs and dilapidated infrastructure, is to be used to house the most dangerous criminals.

A White House spokesman told Reuters that cost assessments are still ongoing and the final figure has not yet been determined.

The plan has faced widespread criticism from California officials and experts who see it as unrealistic and more of a political show, especially given Alcatraz’s current status as a tourist attraction and national park that attracts more than a million visitors annually.
