NASA Image of the Day Frozen bubbles of methane gas in Lake Baikal
Lake Baikal in the south of Siberia is one of the world heritages of UNESCO, the largest lake in the world in terms of volume, the oldest and the deepest, which contains more than 20% of the world’s fresh water.
Baikal is also a huge reservoir of methane gas; A greenhouse gas that, if released, can increase the absorption of infrared light in the earth’s atmosphere and make our planet warmer by trapping heat.
Fortunately, the amount of methane that is currently leaking out of this lake does not have a significant impact on the climate, but it is not clear what the consequences of a significant increase in temperature in this area or a decrease in the water level of Lake Baikal will be.
