The Wall Street Journal reported that after more than two decades of military presence in Iraq and spending about $1.7 trillion, the United States has completed the process of withdrawing its troops from the country, and the country’s last major military base has also been closed.
However, Washington will retain some of its intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities, and a number of US Marines will remain in Iraq to protect the country’s embassy and diplomatic centers.
According to reports, US air defense systems have also been withdrawn from Iraq; it was previously reported that Patriot systems deployed around Erbil had been withdrawn from the country.
This withdrawal comes after the United States and Iraq had previously agreed to end the international coalition’s military mission against ISIS in Iraq by September 30, 2026.
