Mohammad Sharifullah, an Afghan citizen accused in connection with the 2021 attack on Kabul International Airport, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the United States on Wednesday.
Sharifullah was reportedly convicted in April by a US federal jury of providing material support to ISIS-K; he also admitted in an interview with the FBI that he had helped the group plan dozens of attacks over a period of about a decade.
However, the jury was divided on whether Sharifullah’s direct support played a role in the deaths of 13 American soldiers and about 160 Afghan civilians in the August 2021 attack on Kabul airport.
